Gauge 28 vs Gauge 30 Mabati: Which One Should You Buy in Kenya?
Gauge 28 vs Gauge 30 Mabati: Which One Should You Buy in Kenya?
Gauge 28 vs Gauge 30 Mabati ? – You’re at the hardware, or you’ve just called a supplier, and the guy on the other end asks: “Unataka G28 au G30?”
If you hesitated – you’re not alone. Most Kenyans buying mabati for the first time (and honestly, even some who’ve built before) aren’t entirely sure what the difference is. They just know one is “thicker” and one is “cheaper” – but which is which? And does it actually matter for your specific project?
It does. Picking the wrong gauge can cost you money now, or cost you a lot more money later. This guide breaks it down cleanly, with real prices, so you can decide with confidence.
First things first – what does “gauge” actually mean?
Here’s the part that trips everyone up: a higher gauge number means a thinner sheet.
So Gauge 30 (G30) is thinner than Gauge 28 (G28). Not the other way around.
Think of it like this – the gauge number originally referred to how many times a piece of steel was rolled during manufacturing. More rolls = thinner sheet = higher number. It’s a colonial-era engineering hangover, but it’s what we’re working with.
In practical terms:
| G30 | G28 | |
| Thickness | ~0.25 mm | ~0.32 mm |
| Weight per sheet | Lighter | Heavier |
| Strength | Standard | Higher |
| Price per metre (BCM) | From KSh 480–570 | From KSh 670 |
Those prices above are Builder Choice Mabati’s current sale prices – factory-direct, cut to your exact length, delivered countrywide.
Gauge 30 – the workhorse of Kenyan residential roofing
G30 is the most commonly installed gauge across Kenya, from Kisumu to Kitengela to Karatina. And there’s a good reason for that – for a standard residential house on a properly built roof structure with good purlin spacing, G30 does the job reliably and keeps your budget manageable.
Builder Choice Mabati G30 prices:
- KSh 480/m Box / Corrugated Glossy:
- KSh 570/m Box Profile Matte:
- KSh 570/m Corrugated Matte:
- KSh 570/m Builder Z Tile, Builder Tile, Builder Brick Tile:
- KSh 570/m Ridge Cap, Builder Roll Top, Roof Valley, Barge Boards:
G30 is a solid choice when:
- You’re roofing a residential home with standard purlin spacing (600mm–900mm)
- Your roof pitch is moderate – not extremely flat, not extremely steep
- You’re working with a budget and need to maximise coverage per shilling
- Your fundi has confirmed the roof structure is sound and well-supported
- You’re in a relatively temperate area with normal rainfall patterns
The key phrase there is “with a good roof structure.” G30 on properly spaced purlins performs beautifully. G30 on wide-spaced, poorly done purlins is where problems start – but that’s a structural issue, not a gauge issue.
Gauge 28 – when you need more muscle
G28 is noticeably thicker and heavier. Pick up a G28 sheet next to a G30 and you’ll feel the difference immediately. That extra metal means more rigidity, more resistance to denting, better performance over longer spans, and a sheet that holds its shape under load.
Builder Choice Mabati G28 prices:
- KSh 670/m Box Profile Matte:
- KSh 670/m Corrugated Matte:
- KSh 670/m Builder Z Tile, Builder Tile, Builder Brick Tile:
- KSh 670/m Ridge Cap, Builder Roll Top, Roof Valley, Barge Boards:
G28 makes more sense when:
- Your purlin spacing is wider than standard (common on older or informal builds)
- You’re roofing a larger commercial or industrial structure
- Your area experiences heavy hailstorms or very high winds (parts of the Rift Valley, highland areas, coastal zones)
- You have a very low-pitch or near-flat roof where water sits longer
- You’re building to last 20–30 years without touching the roof again
- The fundi or structural engineer has specifically recommended it
The price difference between G30 and G28 at Builder Choice is KSh 90–100 per metre. On a 100-metre job, that’s KSh 9,000–10,000 extra. For many projects that’s worth it for the peace of mind. For others, that money is better spent elsewhere.
What about Gauge 32?
You’ll sometimes hear G32 mentioned – this is even thinner than G30. It’s generally not recommended for roofing. G32 is more suited to light applications like fencing, cladding temporary structures, or low-load situations. For any serious roof that needs to last, stick to G30 minimum, G28 if the factors above apply to your project.
Does the finish matter too? Gloss vs Matte
Yes – and this is where a lot of buyers make a decision they later regret.
Glossy finish (like the Builder Box/Corrugated Glossy at KSh 480/m for G30) has a shinier surface. It looks very sharp when first installed.
Matte finish has a flatter, more subdued look that many people prefer for residential homes – it reads as more premium and ages more gracefully. Builder Choice Mabati’s matte range comes in at KSh 570/m for G30 and KSh 670/m for G28.
For both finishes, Builder Choice uses a coating built to hold colour season after season – resisting the fading and chalking that plagues cheaper mabati after a few rains.
How to know you’re getting the gauge you paid for
This is a real problem in the Kenyan market. Some suppliers sell G32 sheets labelled as G30, or underweight G30 labelled as G28. It happens more than people admit.
A few ways to protect yourself:
- Buy factory-direct. When you buy directly from Builder Choice Mabati – you eliminate the middleman and the substitution risk.
- Ask for KEBS certification. Builder Choice Mabati is KEBS certified. A supplier who can’t show certification is a red flag.
- Feel the weight. A genuine G28 sheet is noticeably heavier than G30. If the “G28” feels suspiciously light, trust that instinct.
- Get it cut to length. Builder Choice cuts to your exact measurement – which also makes it easier to verify what you’re getting.
So – which gauge should you buy?
For most Kenyan residential homes – G30 is sufficient if your roof structure is properly built and you’re buying from a reputable manufacturer whose G30 is actually G30.
Go G28 if your purlins are widely spaced, you’re in a high-wind or heavy-hail area, you’re building a commercial structure, or you want to build once and never think about your roof again.
And whatever you choose – don’t compromise on the manufacturer. A genuine G30 from Builder Choice Mabati will outperform a fake G28 from a dodgy stockist every time.
